Ghostwriting M&A commentary for a corporate finance adviser.
I was asked to ghostwrite three articles for Arrowpoint’s Global Acquirer Trends series. Working from calls with the firm’s subject-matter experts and its own data, I turned their views on international buyer activity, the 2024 deal outlook and private equity into polished commentary.
IN USE
Investment commentaries under senior bylines
M&A was the area of focus this time. The work began on calls with Arrowpoint’s managing directors, who couldn’t go over 20-30 mins. I had limited time to get across a new part of the M&A market, pinpoint the main trends, and hear the tone of voice they themselves spoke. Both Arrowpoint marketing and the SMEs approved my work first time of asking.

THE ARTICLES
Global Acquirer Trends
The work ranged from interpreting Arrowpoint’s deal data to putting a clear point of view around their outlook.
Global Acquirer Trends, H1 2023
PUBLISHED 17 AUGUST 2023
The first piece read Arrowpoint’s deal data against the mood in the market. I gave the numbers an order, drew out what had changed by region and grew the argument into the firm’s view of the second half.
Reflections on 2023, expectations for 2024
PUBLISHED 5 FEBRUARY 2024
An assessment of what 2023 had actually delivered and what might unlock activity in 2024. Financing conditions, elections, geopolitics, UK valuations and sector demand all had to sit within one argument.
Private Equity to bring a wave of opportunities in 2024
PUBLISHED 22 FEBRUARY 2024
Here the focus narrowed to private equity. The piece explained why a difficult 2023 could still leave buyers ready to move as conditions looked set to improve in 2024. That was to a great extent, the party line.
THE GHOSTWRITING
Working off the back of Zoom calls
The process here was very familiar. I’ve done these types of articles and commentaries dozens of times. The calls are my chance to understand what the SMEs have as substance, and then I turn that into an article.
The finished copy always has to sound natural under a senior byline. I kept the advisers’ point of view, added the context a wider business audience would need and checked that every claim followed from the data or the expert’s judgement.
My part of the job
- Draw out the view from Arrowpoint’s subject-matter experts
- Find the argument in the notes
- Draft and edit under named Arrowpoint bylines
- Handle data, sources and market terms carefully
- Write the LinkedIn copy for each release
